Burkittsville is a small, sleepy, historic village nestled between two Civil War battlefields in central Maryland. It is about 75 minutes west of Baltimore and 75 minutes south of Washington DC. It is also just 25 minutes west of Frederick, MD.
Burkittsville became (in)famous at the end of the last millenium when, in 1999, it was thrust into the spotlight as the setting for a documentary horror film, The Blair Witch Project. While the town does have a dark, dense stretch of woods on the west end of town the legend of a child stealing witch inhabiting the woods is fake. Still, many fans of the movie visit the town annually and often leave with one of the many witch costumes available for purchase.
